When my Dad was drafted to the New York Yankees

I was going through an old memory box and came across this newspaper clipping that stopped me in my tracks.

It mentions my dad, Robert Singer, just 18 years old at the time, being selected by the New York Yankees as their second pick. He was an outfielder and pitcher out of Culver City, California, chasing a dream at a level most people never reach.

Reading it now, decades later, it really hits me what that moment must have meant. The long practices, the discipline, the pressure, and the sheer love of the game that got him there. It wasn’t luck, it was commitment, stamina, and years of showing up even when it was hard.

He went on to play at USC for baseball, and while life takes everyone in different directions, this moment is something I think deserves to be remembered and celebrated. Not everyone gets their name called by a historic franchise like the Yankees, especially as one of their top picks.

Just wanted to share a piece of family history I’m incredibly proud of.

Second pick by the Yankees out of Culver City at eighteen. What an incredible thing to find at the bottom of a memory box. You are right that this deserves to be celebrated, your dad earned every bit of it.
